Vlog Questions – Andrew San Pedro

What are some important considerations when filming outdoors?

A boomer microphone is important for outdoors in terms of not letting the environment interrupt your film with its disturbing noise. The environment to change to a good look makes the film high quality because it doesn’t look its being rushed or the film looking like its a mess because a chain of different environments are mixed together in one film.

How critical is story boarding and scripting before you begin filming?

The critical points of story boarding and scripting is that you need plans and lines on what you’re saying. Reasons why its important is because you need to memorize and learn how to position yourself in the chosen environment. If you don’t have any of those then you’ll struggle since you have no lines to memorize and your story will look confusing.

What are some methods in preventing shaky cameras?

Tripods help handle the shakiness of the camera. Tripods in the other hand are quite expensive and are difficult to carry or hold onto since it involves 2 hands. Tripods are used to in most picture taking events such as school photos, Weddings, Birthdays, graduation they’re usually there to make the pictures look presentable and neat.

Why might you need to consider appropriate audio levels and sound effects?

Audio effects are the main sounds you need to listen, these audio effects are usually from the film you have captured. Sound effects in the other hand helps make the film look catchy or mesmerizing for those who are willing to watch the film; however leveling the sounds makes the film suitable because you can’t have both audio or sound effects in the same level, it makes it really loud and annoying.

  • What are some important considerations when filming outdoors?

When filming outdoors, there are several things to consider and take note of before filming. Some of these things include the lighting. Lighting outdoors can vary as a result of time, weather conditions and location. For example, in a sunny day, light is intense and will also create harsh shadows under the eyes and chin, and the colour temperature is close to white. Another thing to consider is wind, which would effect the audio picked up by the microphone.

  • How critical is storyboarding and scripting before you begin filming?

Storyboarding is critical in film making since it gives the cinematographer and director an idea of what the producer envisioned for the product. Knowing this vision allows the crew to know what to do and how to achieve this vision.

  • What are some methods in preventing shaky cameras?

Shaky videos (in most cases) scream out “amateur”. Shaking cameras may distract viewers, as well as obstruct the shot that was attempted. Methods to reduce the effect of camera shake include:

A tripod: A three legged camera stand that can be used to keep the camera still as well as operate without a user.

A glidecam: A image stabilisation rig that is attatched to the universal tripod mount. It uses balance and inertia to stabilise the image, even when moving.

and in-lens VR/IS (Vibration Reduction and Image Stabilisation): Vibrations caused inside the lens to counter handheld shake.

  • What different types of framing and composition might you use when filming?

There are several forms of composition that can be used in film making:

Leading lines: Lines in an image that lead the viewer to looking to the subject.

Rule of thirds: Placing the subject where imaginary lines that divide the image into thirds both horizontally and vertically intersect.

Negative space: a composition that includes the subject and a simple background, exclusively.

1.What are some important considerations when filming outdoors?

When filming outdoors, it should be considered to use Boom microphones because wind and other outdoor noise can interfere with the recording. Also be weary of the weather for rain could disrupt the equipment or the filming. The set that one desires must be planned out so that no interruptions could occur and it’s is advisable to use High definition cameras.

2.How critical is storyboarding and scripting before you begin filming?

Storyboard and scripting is necessary before one films because it is required to actually know what one is doing before one ought to film. Without any form of planning, the group members will have their own view of things, think on the spot when making a video and ultimately create a dodgy, poorly directed and poorly scripted video which wouldn’t engage the viewer and would confuse the viewer.

3. How can iMovie techniques and transitions enhance the message of your video?

‘iMovie’ techniques such as transitions can enhance the message of the video by providing useful fonts which can help portray an idea across in words, the transitions provide a fluid change from one scene to the next which can mask the cutting and pasting of clips and iMovie techniques are able to add and modify sound effects in the video.

4. Why might you need to consider appropriate audio levels and sound effects?

Because of interference from outside the video such as the wind, it is to consider appropriate audio levels and sound effects. Tinkering the sound effects allows one to experience a sense of heightened realism as if one is actually in the video.

Blog Reflection on the Process of Video Blogging… By Alex Ritchie

1. What are some important considerations when filming outdoors?

Filming outdoor can be a real pain and there are a few consideration to think about when doing so. Firstly the best place to film outdoor is a place without strong or any wind. Wind can be a major problem when filming outdoor because it can effect the sound. You should also consider filming somewhere where there is sun but too much sun will just make it too bright.

2. What are some methods in preventing shaky cameras?

No video looks good when it’s shaking so why not prevent it? There are many ways to prevent a shaky camera but the main one is to use a stand or tripod. The Glidcam is also popular for filmers. The Glidcam allows you to move smoothly unlike the tripod.

3. Why might you need to consider appropriate audio levels and sound effects?

Don’t you hate it when your audio is fuzzy. Audio fuzziness can be caused when your audio level is too loud, so always make sure you have it at a appropriate level. When using special effects make sure it relates to the scene and also make sure it’s in the spot and it’s the right length because you wouldn’t want a explosion sound after the explosion image.

4. How critical is storyboarding and scripting before you begin filming?

It’s always important to plan your video before recording so making a storyboard and scripting can help a lot. Storyboarding gives you an image of how the scene is going to look like but scripting doesn’t give you a image but gives you more detail on what to say and what to do

Reflection on the process of Video Blogging – Elias Draybi

What are some important considerations when filming outdoors?

  • Wind needs to be considered as it causes sound disruptions
  • The weather e.g. rain needs to be considered as cameras may not be waterproof and could get damaged

Which Green Screen Techniques are best suited for your video and why?

  • Depending on whats happening in front of the screen may affect how the green screen works. So if anyone or anything is wearing green and the green-screen is on the green side, it may cause your video to pick up the props instead of the background; in cases like these you would have to swap the green-screen to the blue side.

What are some methods in preventing shaky cameras?

  • Using a camera tripod to film means that you get a steady video and the focus is excellent. Other suggestions may include sitting the camera on a table or steady surface.

How can iMovie techniques and transitions enhance the message of your video?

  • By using iMovie we can enhance the audiences focus to make them want to watch the video.
  • We can make the video appealing and engaging

Surrogacy.. a bit like torrenting movies – Elias Draybi

Surrogacy, refers to a woman who bears a child on behalf of another woman, either from her own egg fertilised by the other woman’s partner, or from the implantation in her uterus of a fertilised egg from the other woman. But isn’t that like cheating? isn’t that being greedy?

The title of this blog, ‘Surrogacy.. a bit like torrenting movies’ means this; When people download movies illegally it’s usually because they can’t afford to buy a movie or have restrictions accessing movies legally, a bit like surrogacy. Women who can’t have baby’s usually feel left out when visiting friends and family, sometimes to the extent of taking up surrogacy. Just like when we stop at nothing to get our hands on a movie, women tend to ignore God’s plan for their life and “download” a baby through surrogacy.

Myself being a male, makes it difficult for me to write a blog about women being selfish by taking up surrogacy, how? Well from a woman’s perspective they would feel left out, seeing all of their friends having kids and missing out on being called ‘mum’.

The Catholic Church opposes surrogacy as it teaches its followers that God has other plans for them. But if you have strong faith in God and you have been sealed to your spouse in the temple, you can have posterity in the next life. I know that sounds impossible, but it is the truth.

Many women now a day have lost faith in God and have taken matters into their own hands by genetically engineering their own ‘designer baby’ which is also opposed by the church. While many people think that surrogacy wouldn’t disrupt anything of catholic sort, it is because they see no harm in a family that are happy to have a child that they could never produce, a child that will address his/her parents by mum and dad. But it actually infringes the child’s right to be born of a father and mother known to him/her and bound to each other by marriage.

Although the Catholic Church opposes surrogacy, its becomes a dispute as to why Abraham and Sarai used a surrogate mother to give them a child…
And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. – Genesis 16:13

The video below May question us Catholics wether we personally think surrogacy is that bad

Decide to Suicide? By: A. San Pedro

When we are born from our mothers, we are claimed to be God’s greatest creations. Living and walking in the environment of our world. God gave us a gift to be good stewards and to take care of our planet just like guardians.

We usually develop problems in life and I think that problems helps us improve our well being and our mentality, helps people try to handle stress and maintain the problem.

Suicide is defined as killing oneself in purpose. and approximately 100,000 people commit suicide. Our Generation right now is currently corrupted with suicidal deaths, mainly the deaths are from specific groups. Teenagers are the main groups that usually commit suicide.

In today’s society technology advances way too fast. Evolution to phones, massive upgrades to computers, Huge flat screen TV’s. Technology is quite advanced, and this means that cyber bullying is currently the main type of bullying nowadays. Internet connections help technology feel so powerful.

Social media became a world wide problem and teenagers are either harassed or bullied, teenagers are having this problem everyday; although teenagers have the option to block other users that are provoking them over the internet, they still get bullied within outdoor society.

Kids nowadays are being bullied by what they’re doing such as drinking, one thing that kids shouldn’t do at such a young age. Drugs, easy to get nowadays because people make them. Partying at night, kids right now are partying so hard that sometimes they get drugged then they are forced to do stupid and unexplainable things. The things that kids do, get something bad right back at them and bullying became one thing specifically

Christians believe that the term suicide is a mortal sin. According to the Bible, Genesis 1:26 -27, it says: “Then God said”, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” This text means that we are all created in the image and imagination of God; and taking our lives means that we are destroying God’s greatest creation.

Capital Punishment: The Opposite Day Gospel by G. Vallido

“Criminals do not die by the hands of the law. They die by the hands of other men.”

George Bernard Shaw, Man and Superman

Crime is without a doubt, a serious matter. It is considered to be just when a person is punished for their crimes (that is if the criminal is rightly accused). Punishment can range from simple fines and confiscation, all the way to imprisonment and even death. The latter  form of punishment is called capital punishment. Capital punishment is defined as the legally authorised killing of someone as a punishment for crime. Capital punishment is a highly controversial topic amongst numerous groups in society, including the Catholic Church. The question as to whether it is morally acceptable has been debated for centuries.

cappun

In the secular society, there are several arguments in favour of capital punishment and several arguments against. People argue that capital punishment is morally acceptable because it is believed that real justice requires people to suffer for their wrongdoing, and to suffer in a way appropriate for the crime, and in the case of an atrocious crime such as murder, the criminal should be put to death. Other arguments for the practice of capital punishment include the deterrence of other criminals, the prevention of reoffending and the closure for victim’s families and friends.

Conversely, people argue against that the capital punishment is morally unacceptable under the belief that all life is valuable. So valuable that even the worst murderers should not be deprived of the value of their lives. Everyone has the right to live, therefore capital punishment can be considered to be the act of taking away that right. Those who believe in the abolishment of capital punishment also argue that the theorised deterrence of criminals is statistically flawed, and that “retribution” is only another excuse for revenge.

“We cannot teach that killing is wrong by killing.”

U.S. Catholic Conference

The Catholic Church has a unique stance towards the issue. The Catholic Church has a mixed perspective about the practice of capital punishment because of the doctrine and theology found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Bible & Catholic Social Teaching. However, in the contemporary Catholic Church it is generally accepted that the death penalty should be abolished.

“The new evangelization calls for followers of Christ who are unconditionally pro-life: who will proclaim, celebrate and serve the Gospel of life in every situation. A sign of hope is the increasing recognition that the dignity of human life must never be taken away, even in the case of someone who has done great evil. . . . I renew the appeal I made . . . for a consensus to end the death penalty, which is both cruel and unnecessary.”

—Pope John Paul II Papal Mass, St. Louis, Missouri, January 27, 1999

In the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the exposition of Catholic doctrine and teaching, it is said that the death penalty is acceptable in the circumstance where there is no other form of punishment that is suitable for an extremely heinous crime. The Catechism states that:

“Assuming that the guilty party’s identity and responsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor.”

– Catechism of The Catholic Church #2267

In contrast, it is found in the Bible that the act of killing is a dishonour against God & is the transgression of His commandments. In the Ten Commandments, which are the foundational moral laws of Judaism/Christianity, it is stated that “Thou shalt not kill”, which implies that any form of killing is prohibited.

However, in the Bible it also states that “the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”. This verse establishes that sin only results in death and that all sinners deserve death, but since we’ve been given the undeserved gift of Jesus, we have life that is eternal. Since all of humanity has received Jesus, all of humanity has  received a second chance, therefore, capital punishment should be considered theft of this second chance.

It is quite clear that the Catholic Church has a very self contradictory, mixed and confusing stance towards the issue.

Personally, I believe that the practice of capital punishment is unacceptable since it proves to be the “opposite of the Gospel”.

The Gospel was all about forgiveness, grace and love. The Gospel was the greatest love story of all time: the God of the Universe stepping down from His throne to pay the world’s debt. Christians should adopt the attitude of Jesus and “forgive those who have trespassed against them”. The act of taking one’s life because of unforgiveness greatly contrasts what God has commanded us.

God has commanded that we love one another as He has loved us, in John 13: 34. This means we are to follow Jesus’ example of love. Jesus saw through people’s sin and loved them, regardless of what they have done. For example, in John 8, when the pompous Pharisees caught a woman committing adultery, Jesus forgave her, did not condemn her and was even an advocate for her. We are to imitate Christ in our love, in our faith and in our purity, as said in 1 Timothy 4:12.

Since I believe that capital punishment contradicts the Gospel’s message of love, grace and forgiveness, I stand for the abolishment of the practice. We are all sinners; we all deserve death; but God has given us a second chance- eternal life. We aren’t entitled to take away one’s second chance because we’re all in the same boat. We’ve all fallen short of God, but He stepped down and raised us up.

“So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.”

– John 8:7 NKJV
